Since their inception just over a year ago, The Sexual Side Effects have been on fire. They’ve not only headlined one of Atlanta’s biggest street festivals, the East Atlanta Strut, but they’ve also sold out numerous club shows, staged their own “Gilded Trash” variety shows at the Masquerade (Atlanta) and recently had their first music video for “All She’ll Ever Hurt” screened at the Atlanta Film Festival. This success has earned the band a nomination for Best Alternative Band in the 2012 Georgia Music Awards. Having already set Atlanta ablaze, that fire recently spread up and down the East Coast with a tour that concluded with an attention-grabbing performance at one of New York City’s most celebrated venues, The Bitter End.
The SSE infection continued to spread into Florida last month as the band played a series of dates scheduled around its performance at Sarasota’s Harvey Milk Festival. Drawing comparisons to Joan Jett and Chrissie Hynde, Dallas native Amber Taylor’s ringleader-like antics are only part of the band’s sideshow-like spectacle, which often includes guest musicians, go-go dancers, burlesque dancers and other performers. The androgynous Amber returns to her home state a much different person than when she left, now fronting a band whose sound is equal parts Britpop, post-punk and 70s glam rock – the perfect backdrop for the ambiguous front girl’s theatrics.
For this upcoming Texas outbreak, The Side Effects have run away with the counterculture collective known as the Revolution Circus! With the added carnie camp of the Revolution Circus’ jugglers, dancers and other performers, The SSE will be more than ready to take on the expected crowd of 60,000 that will be awaiting at the main stage of the Houston Pride Festival, where the band will be opening for Sarah Golden from NBC’s The Voice. And upon the band’s return to Atlanta, Amber and her boys will be hosting Texas band Girl in a Coma, sharing a bill at the EARL.
The band burst into 2012 with its debut EP HIGH MAINTENANCE, available as a free download on the band’s website and Band Camp page,www.thesexualsideeffects.com. With more tour dates and other big plans in 2012, The Sexual Side Effects infection is definitely spreading.
